CHAPTER EIGHT

JACK

As I flew closer to the cliffs that Chris had pointed out as being the harpy clamor’s territory, I scouted for a good place to let Sol back onto the ground.

Even though we had plenty of dragon firepower backing us up, we both knew harpies were no fucking joke. They kept their talons razor-sharp and tipped with poison, and their speed was legendary. Dragons may be two or three times larger, but harpies often flew in formations like the jet fighters on Earth, attacking in deadly unison.

Dragon scales might be great armor, but my wings made me vulnerable.

“Just stay clear of the matriarch. She’s the biggest and strongest by far,” Sol warned as I landed on a narrow cliff to allow him to climb off my back. We were only a few dozen feet off the ground, and he could climb up or down, depending on what he spotted and where.

I nodded my head without shifting - harpies were matriarchal and tougher for it. I wasn’t completely sure, but I’d heard their males couldn’t even shift. They’d be fierce in their own way, but it was the females we needed to watch.

I lifted into the air as silently as my wings could manage, scanning the cliffs for movement. Chris and the others were hovering higher, waiting for any signal from me, or an obvious moment to strike.

Sol began to scale sideways and down the cliff, and we spotted movement at the same time.

A crowd of four-legged creatures shot like bullets away from the base of the cliff, the movement marked by the howl of hyenas. I bit down on a roar as Sol shifted and lit out after them.

But I couldn’t follow him - tawny-winged harpies began to stream from the narrow openings in the cliff’s cave system, swooping and screaming as they rallied and rose toward the dragons. Spears were sailing out of the dark places on the mountainside, showing me where the males were. Dragons roared as they careened down from the clouds to meet everything head on.

Yeah, we had a fight on our hands. I just hoped we didn’t make Carlyle’s balancing job as Queen harder by fighting it.

Sol’s furious roar echoed up from the ground, just as I was heading up to help one of Chris’s guards with a seven-on-one situation. Scanning the grass below, I saw Sol being pursued by a lone harpy, even as he was beginning to gain ground on the fleeing hyenas. There were a few sleek black jaguars mixed in with the runners, but I couldn’t tell for sure if the twins were there.

He was way outnumbered.

Fuck! I swerved away from my people’s fight and raced to help my teammate. Even one harpy against a lion could be bad, and if the hyenas stopped running to fight, he’d be toast. And if Ezra and Evelyn were here? Adrenaline surged through me as I flapped harder.

I was faster than the harpy, and I clobbered her with my wings as I worked to get ahead of the four-leggers on the ground.
